Here is Isaac Owens (he / him), a Software Engineer with MediaMath, who joined the company in the middle of the pandemic and has yet to meet any of his co-workers in person. Here is his approach to virtual interactions that is helping him build meaningful connections with his team:

Isaac: You have to imagine your screen persona as a body in a way. It is weird to say and it even sounds funny as an avatar. But if you think about what you do in the office… When you are in the office you can be around people and not say anything, but your physical presence is felt or noticed and that noticing is what gives that sense of place, you know, that presence. Even if you are not actively engaging in what’s going on in that community, you are still there. So you sort of have to replace that virtually with your on-screen presence. That means people need to see your name more often. If there is a comment in the slack you comment to that too to make sure your name is popping up. You send your emails for a really clear communication. You have to imagine that whenever you are popping up on screen it is like your body being in the space, and you have to imagine what other people’s screen experience of you is. It takes a little bit more thought, but it’s doable.
